Dear Parent/Guardian:

Your child, along with public school students throughout California, will participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). CAASPP is a system intended to provide information that can be used to monitor student progress and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and careers.

This year, CAASPP includes computer-based tests in English–Language Arts and Mathematics for students in Grades 3-8 and 11, as well as the new Science Pilot test in grades 5, 8, and 9-12.

Our school will administer CAASPP assessments during these dates:

CAASPP Assessment:

·         ELA and Mathematics                          March 28th -  30th

·         Science Pilot Test  (10th grade only)    April 5th

To learn more about the types of questions on the computer-based tests, you and your child can view practice tests at the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balanced Practice Test webpage at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp.

Following spring 2017 testing, students will receive individual score reports. Student score reports will be sent home to parents and will include an overall score, a description of the student’s achievement level for subjects tested, and other information.

The results of this test will also be used as the student’s Early Assessment Program (EAP) status. The Early Assessment Program (EAP) is designed to provide students, their families, and high schools with early signals about students’ readiness for college-level English and mathematics. The California State University (CSU) and participating California Community Colleges (CCC) will use student results from the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments as a student’s’ EAP status in English and Mathematics. The release of the results does not affect the student’s application for admission. Results are only used to determine placement of students after they have been admitted to the university. To find out more about EAP, please visit http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/hs/eapindex.asp

If you would like more information, please visit the Parent/Student tab of the CDE CAASPP webpage at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/.  We encourage all students to participate in CAASPP since results provide valuable information about your student’s progress for both you and the school. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation, please contact Angela Gonzales at 275-7075 ext. 4108 or by email agonzales@gwusd.org .
